The Victorian
Institute of Teaching registers all teachers who seek to practice in
Victorian schools. All graduating teachers are granted provisional
registration for a period of 12 months, with the capacity to extend that
registration for a further 12 months.
This period
of provisional registration provides teachers entering the profession with
time to consolidate and develop their professional knowledge and skills in
independent practice.
Supporting
new teachers as they join the profession is essential for enhancing the
quality and strength of teaching practice and for renewal and capacity
building within the teaching profession. By providing a formal and
structured induction process across the profession, the Institute can
provide the support new teachers should have to consolidate their
professional learning and develop sound professional practice.
Provisionally
registered teachers are required to demonstrate to the Institute that
their professional practice meets the Standards of Professional Practice
for Full Registration, within this two year period.
The Standards
of Professional Practice for Full Registration define in eight standards
what the teaching profession believes all teachers should know and be able
to do. These standards must be achieved before full registration can be
granted.
Through this
two-step process of awarding full registration the Institute can provide
an assurance to all members of the profession and the community that
teachers who are fully registered have the knowledge, skills and
commitment required to meet the standards of professional practice
expected of and set by the profession.
Obtaining Full Registration
The Institute
requires all provisionally registered teachers, to undertake an
evidence-based process to demonstrate that their practice meets or exceeds
the eight standards required for full registration.
The process
includes the preparation of Evidence of Professional Practice with three
components:
Evidence Component
|
|
What is involved? |
| 1. An Analysis
of Teaching and Learning, |
|
Approximately 6 pages of planning information and
reflection, accompanied by attachments and student work
samples
|
| 2. Collegiate Classroom Activities, |
|
Records
from at least three collaborative classroom activities, completed
throughout the year.
|
| 3. A Commentary
on Professional Activities. |
|
A list
of professional activities undertaken throughout the year together
with a commentary on professional learning arising from three of the
listed activities. |
The evidence
will normally be presented to and assessed by a school-based panel. This
will maximise the benefits of professional learning within the school, and
provide an opportunity to affirm sound professional practice within a
teacher’s own professional community.
Timeframe for completing the process
All
graduating teachers are granted provisional registration for an initial
period of 12 months. The majority of provisionally registered teachers
will be able to complete this evidence based process within this time.
School-based
panels are most likely to be formed to discuss and assess the evidence in
Terms 3 or 4, although the process can be completed following 80 days of
teaching practice.
There is also
a capacity to extend the period of provisional registration, providing a
further 12 months in which to complete this process, if additional time is
needed.
